How to Play a TeraBox Video in VLC or MX Player

29 October 2026 · 2 min read

For files the browser can't decode, for subtitles, for playback speed and gestures — sometimes you want a real player app. The two routes that work, the one that mostly doesn't, and why.

Why you'd want to

The browser player handles most things. VLC and MX Player handle everything: HEVC on a phone that lacks the hardware, MKV containers, AC3 and DTS audio, subtitle files, multiple audio tracks, playback speed to 4×, swipe gestures for brightness and volume. If a video won't play in a browser — here's why that happens — these two will.

Route 1: Download, then open (reliable)

  1. Paste the link into our player, press play, tap Download.
  2. Open VLC (Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac) or MX Player (Android) and find the file in Downloads.

That's it. Any format, any codec, any size. It's the route we recommend for anything the browser refuses.

Route 2: VLC's "Open Network Stream" (mostly doesn't work — here's why)

VLC can play a video straight from a URL without downloading. People naturally try pasting a TeraBox link into it. It fails, for two separate reasons:

  • A share link (terabox.com/s/…) isn't a video; it's a web page. VLC gets HTML and gives up.
  • The actual video URL behind the page is temporary, tied to the session that requested it, and requires headers VLC doesn't send. Even if you dig it out of a browser's network tab, it dies within minutes.

Our player's own stream addresses are deliberately not reusable outside the page either — they're how we keep the service from being scraped. So Route 2 is, honestly, a dead end for TeraBox. Download instead.

MX Player on Android

After downloading: open MX Player → it scans Downloads automatically → tap the file. If a video plays with no sound, open MX's settings → Decoder → enable SW decoder for audio, which handles AC3/DTS. If the picture is choppy, switch to HW+ decoder.

Subtitle files

Put the .srt file in the same folder as the video with the same name (film.mp4 + film.srt) and both players load it automatically. In VLC you can also drag it onto the window or use Subtitle → Add.

What won't work, and why

  • Streaming without downloading — covered above.
  • Playing a TeraBox folder as a playlist — download the files you want; both apps can then play a folder in order.
  • Casting from VLC to a TV — VLC can do Chromecast on Android, and it's actually smoother than casting a browser tab. Download first, then Playback → Renderer.

Common questions

Is there a way to make the TeraBox link open directly in MX Player?

No. A share link is a web page, not a media URL. Download first.

VLC says "unable to open the MRL".

That's the dead-end from Route 2. Use Route 1.

Which is better, VLC or MX Player?

MX Player has nicer gestures on Android. VLC exists on every platform and is open source. Both decode everything. Pick by taste.
