"Format Not Supported" on TeraBox? Here's What's Actually Happening
29 October 2026 · 4 min read
It isn't the file and it isn't the link — it's a codec your device can't decode. Which three codecs cause almost every case, which phones struggle with which, and the three fixes in order of effort.
What the message really means
"Format not supported" is your device talking, not TeraBox. The video reached your browser fine; your browser opened it and found something inside it can't decode. The same file will often play on a different phone, or in a different app on the same phone.
You'll sometimes see this misexplained online as a browser autoplay issue. It isn't. Autoplay blocks produce a video that doesn't start; this is a video that can't be read.
The three codecs that cause 90% of this
A video file is a container (MP4, MKV, AVI) holding a video stream and an audio stream, each compressed with a codec. Browsers decode some codecs and not others.
HEVC / H.265. Half the size of H.264 for the same quality, so it's popular for sharing. Supported by iPhones since the 7, most Androids since about 2017, Edge and Safari on desktop — but not Chrome or Firefox on Windows without extra steps. The most common cause.
AV1. Newer, even smaller. Supported by recent Chrome, Firefox and flagship phones from 2021 on; not by most budget phones or any iPhone before the 15 Pro.
MKV containers. Not a codec, a box. Browsers can't open .mkv at all, even when the video inside is ordinary H.264. TeraBox will show you the file but won't preview it, and neither can we.
Audio has its own version of this: AC3/EAC3 (Dolby) and DTS tracks play as silence in most browsers. That's the "picture but no sound" case — separate guide.
Fix 1: A different quality
Tap the gear icon and pick another option. TeraBox's lower qualities are re-encoded on their servers into plain H.264, which everything plays. The "original" is the file as uploaded, codec and all. If 480p plays and "original" doesn't, that's the whole story.
Fix 2: Download it and open in VLC or MX Player
Both decode essentially every codec and container in existence, in software if the phone's hardware can't. Press Download under the player, then open the file in VLC (Android, iPhone, PC, Mac) or MX Player (Android). An MKV with HEVC video and DTS audio plays perfectly.
Fix 3: Ask the sender for an MP4
If they made the file, re-exporting as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio makes it play everywhere — every phone, every browser, every TV. Most editing apps call this preset "Compatible" or "Standard".

Why we can't convert it for you
Converting video is slow and heavy — re-encoding a 1 GB file takes minutes of serious processing per viewer. Doing it on the fly for everyone who presses play would make the player unusably slow and the service unaffordable. TeraBox does it once, server-side, for the lower qualities; that's what Fix 1 uses. For everything else, VLC on your device is the honest answer.
Common questions
The video has sound but a black picture. Same problem?
Yes — the video codec is unsupported but the audio codec is fine. Same three fixes.
It plays on my laptop but not my phone. Why?
The laptop's browser has a decoder the phone lacks, or the laptop is on Edge/Safari and the phone's browser is stricter. Fix 1 or 2.
Will updating my phone help?
For AV1 on a phone that got it in a later Android version, sometimes. For HEVC on a budget phone that never had it, no — it's hardware.
