TeraBox Video Not Playing? 9 Fixes That Actually Work
29 October 2026 · 5 min read
Spinner forever, black screen, or an error the moment you press play. Start with the symptom you're seeing — most of these take under a minute to rule in or out.
Start here: which of these is happening?
- The link opens but the video never starts → fixes 1, 2, 5 and 9
- It plays for a bit, then stops → fixes 5, 6 and 9
- "Format not supported" or a decode error → fix 4
- Sound but no picture, or picture but no sound → fix 4, and our no-sound guide
- Nothing happens when you press play → fixes 3 and 7
- It opens a list instead of a video → fix 8
Work through the ones that match. If none fit, the last section tells you how to find out whose problem it actually is.
Fix 1: The link was shared privately
This is the single most common cause. TeraBox lets a sender share with specific people or with anyone with the link. If they picked the first option, you'll see the file name but nothing will play, or you'll get a "no permission" message.
What to do: ask the sender to open the file, tap Share, and choose the public option. Nothing on your end can fix this.
Fix 2: The link has expired or the file is gone
TeraBox links don't expire on a timer, but senders delete files, move them, or revoke shares. The link then opens to an empty page or an error.
What to do: ask for a fresh link. If you keep hitting this with one sender, this guide explains what's happening on their side.
Fix 3: Your browser is blocking autoplay
Browsers won't start video with sound until you've interacted with the page. If the player shows a big play button and nothing else, that's all this is.
What to do: tap the play button once. On our player a tap anywhere on the video does it.
Fix 4: Your phone can't decode the file
Some videos use codecs older phones (or any iPhone before iOS 11) can't play — HEVC/H.265 and AV1 are the usual suspects. The symptoms are "format not supported", or picture without sound, or sound without picture.
What to do: try a different quality from the gear icon — lower qualities are often encoded differently. If every quality fails, download the file and open it in VLC or MX Player, which decode almost anything. Full explanation here.
Fix 5: Your connection can't keep up with the quality
The video starts, stutters, buffers, stutters. On mobile data that's usually just bandwidth.
What to do: gear icon → pick 360p. A 30-minute video drops from roughly 100 MB to 50 MB and plays smoothly on quite slow connections. More on buffering.
Fix 6: An ad blocker or privacy extension is breaking the player
Some aggressive blockers stop the video stream itself, not just ads. The player loads, the spinner spins, nothing arrives.
What to do: allow the site in your blocker, or try in a private window where extensions are usually off. If it works there, you've found it.
Fix 7: Stale cache or cookies
Rare, but real: a half-loaded page from yesterday fights with today's.
What to do: hard-refresh (pull down on mobile, Ctrl+Shift+R on desktop). If that fails, clear the site's data in your browser settings.
Fix 8: It's a folder, not a video
A folder link opens to a list of files. There's nothing to play until you pick one.
What to do: on our player, files in a shared folder appear as tabs above the video — tap the one you want. If the folder is huge, ask the sender for the direct file link. Folder guide.
Fix 9: TeraBox is throttling
TeraBox slows down free-tier traffic, particularly at busy times of day. Our server retries and buffers ahead so you rarely notice — but a long video at peak hours can still take a few seconds to start after a big jump in the timeline.
What to do: give it ten seconds before assuming it's dead. If it's consistently crawling, try again off-peak, or download it on Wi-Fi and watch later.
Still stuck? Here's how to tell whose problem it is
Open the link directly on terabox.com in a browser (not the app). Then:
- Their page shows the file and plays a preview → the link is fine; the problem is between the player and your device. Try another browser.
- Their page shows "no permission" or an error → the link is private or dead. Only the sender can fix it.
- Their page loads but says "open in app" → normal. The file is probably fine; use a browser player.
If it plays on terabox.com but not on our player, we'd like to know — the player quietly reports technical errors to us (no personal details, just the error name and the position in the video), and we fix what we see.
Common questions
Why does the video play on my laptop but not my phone?
Almost always Fix 4: the phone can't decode the codec. Lower quality or VLC.
Why does it start from the beginning when I jump ahead?
That was a bug in our player. It's fixed — if you still see it, hard-refresh to get the current version.
Does the time of day matter?
Yes. TeraBox's free tier is noticeably slower in Indian evenings. Mornings and late nights are smoother.
