TeraBox Video Playing With No Sound? Here's Why

29 October 2026 · 3 min read

Picture's fine, audio's dead. Check three obvious things first, then the one non-obvious cause that explains most of the rest — and the five-second fix for each.

Check these three things first

  1. The player's mute button. The speaker icon in the controls — tap it. Press M on a keyboard.
  2. The phone's volume. Media volume is separate from ringer volume on Android. Press volume-up while the video is playing.
  3. iPhone's silent switch. Safari respects the physical mute switch for some videos. Flip it.

If one of those was it, you're done. If not, read on.

Browser autoplay muting

Browsers start some videos muted when they autoplay, and show a small crossed-out speaker to say so. Tap the speaker in our player once and it stays unmuted for the rest of the session.

When the audio track itself won't decode

This is the non-obvious one. The video codec is fine, so you get picture; the audio codec isn't supported by your browser, so you get silence. The usual culprits are AC3 / EAC3 (Dolby Digital, common in files ripped from discs or broadcasts) and DTS. Browsers decode AAC and MP3; most of them decode nothing else.

How to tell: the video plays smoothly with no error, there's just no sound at any volume, and it's the same on every device you try in a browser.

Fix: tap the gear icon and choose a lower quality. TeraBox re-encodes those server-side with AAC audio, which plays everywhere. If only the "original" is offered, press Download and open the file in VLC or MX Player, which decode AC3 and DTS fine.

Bluetooth and headphone issues

  • Bluetooth earbuds connected but in your pocket. The phone is sending sound to them. Disconnect, or put them in.
  • Earbuds connected to another device. Multipoint earbuds sometimes stay attached to the laptop. Reconnect to the phone.
  • The headphone jack thinks something's plugged in. Lint. Blow it out.

Playing it in VLC instead

If every fix above fails and the file plays silently everywhere, VLC settles it: it decodes any audio codec and also lets you pick between audio tracks (some files carry two languages — the browser plays the first, which might be the silent or wrong one). VLC guide.

iPhone silent switch

Worth its own line because it catches so many people. On iPhones with the physical switch, Safari mutes inline video when the switch is on. Full-screen video usually plays with sound regardless. Flip the switch, or go full screen.

When the file genuinely has no audio

Screen recordings, CCTV exports and some camera clips are recorded without an audio track. If VLC also plays silently and shows no audio track in its menu, there's nothing to hear. Ask the sender whether it had sound for them.

Common questions

The sound is out of sync with the picture.

Different problem, usually the file itself. VLC can shift audio timing (Audio → Audio delay). In a browser there's no fix beyond a lower quality, which is re-encoded and often re-synced.

Sound works at the start, then stops partway.

Rare, but it happens at a point where the file's audio switches codec mid-stream (badly joined clips). Reloading from the spot sometimes recovers; VLC always does.

Only one earbud has sound.

The file is mono and the player is sending it to one channel. VLC: Audio → Stereo mode → Mono.
